For this trailer of sorts, I drew on artist Ari Melenciano’s Otzkö Kazo residency, wherein Melenciano develops her own mythopoesis. In my mythological world, pigeons are great harmonizers that neutralize violent conflict and walk among us. This mythology originated from stories my mom told me growing up, about how pigeons were made by god and special to humans. I used masks to put these pigeons in the environments they would serve in, often replacing other kinds of so-called mediators, like police. These masks serve a purpose similar to that of glitch in my other work: To weave together different ideas to create something new from the combinations. The destruction of images caused by masking and keying strategies also illustrates the non-destructive nature of our digital world contrasted with the extremely destructive nature of our physical one. Pigeons were once domesticated and used for communication in war, but what if they didn’t want to serve such a purpose? What if they were pacifists? Now, they are feral, stunted creatures begging for human interaction. In this work, I aim to imbue the symbolic city dweller pigeon with the spirit of revolutionary community action. This work is the first of many videos I wish to create, utilizing 2D animation and also not, that paint the different world we could have had if society had not abandoned our former fellow: The pigeon.
